Online Credit Card Processing

If you have a website where you sell products or offer services, then you need online credit card processing. Some business owners balk at the expense, but don't realize how much money they are actually passing up by not offering this service. It is estimated that around 90 percent of all Internet purchases are made with a major credit card. This includes debit cards with a credit card logo. The remaining fraction of Internet purchases are made through bank account transfer, paper check or money order sent via postal mail.

The money spent processing credit cards is minimal at best and should be looked at as a necessary business expense. You will find that on average, it costs a few cents or a small percentage for each credit card transaction. The price will depend on which service you use. It may also depend on factors like the amount of each individual transaction or the average number of transactions. When shopping for a processing service read all fine print and make sure you understand the fee scale and what you're getting for the price.

One way to process credit cards is through PayPal. There are benefits and drawbacks to this method. PayPal is very simple to set up and can be linked with your bank account and credit cards. You can add money from your bank account and credit cards to your PayPal account. PayPal even has their own credit card and debit card. For these reasons and more, most people who shop online do have a PayPal account, and many online retailers accept PayPal. However, you do need to provide an option for those individuals who do not use PayPal. This is where a merchant account comes in handy.

A merchant account lets you take major credit and debit cards (and sometimes electronic checks) without the need for a PayPal account. There are certain requirements that business owners must meet before they can get a merchant account. Sometimes there are credit checks performed depending on the provider you use. When seeking an online credit card processing merchant account make sure you do plenty of comparison shopping. You will find that providers vary in what they offer your business and how much their services cost. There are merchant accounts for all kinds of online businesses, from the very small to the very large.
